I was quite intrigued by jasper johns’ flag and target, also the idea of painting as an object, at the same time, I am focusing on theme of text and language. I have a desire to create with Chinese words, so I chose some we called fully-surround structure words in Chinese, and the content of the painting is exactly equivalent to the surface of the support, like flag.

For Chinese people they have no other meaning except being themselves, but for people who don’t know Chinese they are purely abstract, and to some extent, they could be seen as hard-edge paintings. I find it interesting that “what is so familiar to me is totally something else for other people”.

And for me, these paintings are some kind of representation, but they don’t represent physical objects, they represent abstract things, it’s weird and exciting to do this transformation.
